In the following list you can find a number of useful references to different
educational resources and other sites which can help you to prepare yourself
on key issues related to the Centre’s activities whether you are a trainer,
a course participants or an interested visitor to our site. Web sites are collected

- Civnet
Published by Civitas International, this is a web site for civic education
practitioners (teachers, teacher trainers, curriculum designers), as well
as scholars, policymakers, civic-minded journalists, and non-governmental
organizations (NGOs) promoting civil society all over the world. It includes
textbooks, lesson plans, original journal articles and book reviews, civic
news headlines, event listings, organizational contacts, etc.
- Youth Work links and ideas
Links to youth work resources on the internet, ideas for activities to use
with young people, and a selection of web sites set up by and for young people.
- Informal Education (INFED)
A very useful website featuring the following: an introduction to informal
education, a virtual walk through the development of informal education, the
encyclopedia
of informal education with over 200 articles on key thinkers, the theory
and practice of informal education, an informal education forum, educational
resources, details of the main programmes and the agencies involved (plus
links and support materials) and the informal education
archives.

The result of a partnership between the Council of Europe and the European
Commission informing about training opportunities and featuring on-line publications
for youth workers and trainers (T-Kits, Coyote).

An online guide to developing youth partnership for participation.
- Institute
of Development Studies
Includes a selection of introductory articles and a collection of over 3,500
documents and videos consistsing mainly of unpublished practical information
on participation from practitioners and networks. A sub-section features an
overview and documents related to research on participation.
- Oxfam Cool Planet
for teachers
Oxfam is a British charity fighting poverty around the world. This site for
teachers provides access to Oxfam’s latest classroom resources on-line and to
their education catalogue of over 400 resources.
Minorities
- European Roma Rights Centre
The European Roma Rights Center (ERRC) is an international public interest
law organisation which monitors the human rights situation of Roma and provides
legal defence in cases of human rights abuse. Their website includes information
on grants, resources, publicatiions and on the situation of Roma population
in various European countries.
- Internet Centre Anti Racism Europe (iCARE)
This portal includes the United database of IRL addresses of organisations
working against intolerance in Europe, the Magenta Crosspoint Anti Racism
which currently links over 1500 organisations working in the field of antiracism,
human rights, gay & lesbian resources, disability resources etc. in 108
countries around the world, the news section with the latest selected AR news
items, international news sources and the Calender of Internationalism. There
is a possibility to subscribe to mailing lists and to find partners for new
projects through the bulletin board.

Directory of resources on minority human rights and related problems of the
transition period in Eastern and Central Europe (NGOs, publications, bibliographym
mailing list, etc.).
- MOST Journal on Cultural
Pluralism
Full text articles on a variety of issues relating to the sociology of
religion. Topics include religious values, human rights, social integration,

The aim of this virtual library of websites is to provide researchers, scholars,

Offers original articles and features about human rights, plus annotated
links to selected relevant Internet resources compiled by a subject specialist,
a subject-specific bulletin board, and details of related news and events.
Covers human rights issues in the Balkans, Burma, Guatemala, Indonesia, Mexico,
Nigeria, Rwanda and Tibet. Other topics include the International Criminal
Court, government and non-governmental agencies, refugees, torture, trades

- Action Guide:
A Human Rights Resource Manual for Secondary Schools
This page is part of the United Nations Associations Canada. Created for students
and teachers, it provides background information on human rights in Canada,
responds to common questions on human rights and the UN, and includes a list
of action ideas for classroom and community activities to promote involvement
in human rights. Also includes an extensive annotated bibliography of websites,
videos, and non-fiction resources.
- Amnesty International
Amnesty International plays a specific role in the international protection
of human rights. Its activities focus on prisoners: seeking the release of
prisoners of conscience, working for fair and prompt trials for all political
prisoners and opposing the death penalty and torture of prisoners. Information
on current campaigns, activities and membership are available as well as reports
and publications.
- Association for the Prevention of Torture
Apart from news and a list of publications this site also includes a list
of further human rights resources.
- Belgrade Centre
for Human Rights
The main purpose of the Centre is to study human rights and humanitarian law
and to disseminate knowledge about them. It intends thereby to promote the
development of democracy and the rule of law in the FR Yugoslavia (Serbia
and Montenegro), in the successor states of the former Yugoslavia and in other
societies in transition from authoritarian to democratic rule.

The International Training Centre on Human Rights and Peace Teaching
- CIFEDHOP is an international foundation Its overall objective is
to train teachers from primary, secondary and vocational schools and teacher
training colleges in human rights education.
- Citizen21
A Charter88 project that promotes active citizenship in the 21st century.
It is aimed at teachers and anyone working with young people. The site includes
educational resources, Links, events, and the relevant Charter88's page.
- Citizenship foundation
A UK site which aims to support citizenship education in schools.
- Death Penalty Information
Center
Organisation that prepares analytical reports for the media, the public, and
Congress on issues concerning capital punishment in the US. Facts, statistics,
and full text reports are available on topics such as race and the death penalty,
public opinion, and international perspective.
- Derechos
Derechos Human Rights is the first internet based human rights organization.
Their purpose is to work for the promotion and respect of human rights all
over the world, for the right to privacy and against impunity for human rights
violators. They also coordinate several human rights mailing lists, publish
an internet human rights journal, and work on the preservation of memory and
for justice for the disappeared. The site also contains a list of human rights
links.

Database
An international human rights database including documents from the UN, the
Organization for African Unity and HURIDOCS and bibliographies on international
terrorism, hostages and public international law.

- Funding
Directory for Human Rights
The Human Rights Internet (HRI) and the International Center for Human Rights
& Democratic Development (ICHRDD) have published a directory entitled
"Funding Human Rights: An International Directory of Funding Organizations
and Human Rights Awards." The directory lists 98 funding sources and
information on 56 human rights awards.
- Human Rights Education Associates
HREA is an a-political, non-profit organisation in the US whose main mission
is to support efforts aimed at introducing human rights concepts and values
into educational curricula and teaching practices. Their website features
a database of human rights education organisations, funders, trainers and
material producers, and a library of information and case studies for everyone
from teachers and journalists to army and medical personnel. Also includes
links to the Human Rights Net search engine, listservs and mailing lists.

The site includes an internet directory of organizations, an international
human rights document centre, a UN information database, education resources,
urgent alerts, a world calendar of events, and job postings.

Directories of international organisations, links and documents on human rights
law, tribunals, journals, mailing lists and also news of recent conferences.

- Human Rights Watch
Organisation dedicated to protecting the human rights of people around the
world. The site contains information on current events, HRW campaigns, and
HRW publications. Accessible in Spanish, Chinese, Russian, French, Portuguese,
Arabic and English.
- Human Rights Web
Includes an introduction to human rights, a short history of the human rights
movement, and biographies of prisoners of conscience.
- International Helsinki Federation
for Human Rights
The International Helsinki Federation for Human Rights is a self-governing
group of non-governmental, not-for-profit organizations that act to protect
human rights throughout Europe, North America, and the Central Asian republics
formed from the territories of the former Soviet Union. One of its primary
goals is to monitor compliance with the human rights provisions of the Helsinki
Final Act and its Follow-up Documents. Their website includes a list of publications,
information on projects and activities.
- International Humanitarian Law
Database
Full text of 89 international treaties, commentaries on the four Geneva Conventions
and Additional Protocols, with a list of signatories and ratifications. Documents
can be browsed by treaty and country or state.
- International Relations and Security
Network
A clearing house for resources in the field of international relations and
security. Includes sections on specific regions of the world, current conflicts,
resources in areas such as government, political science, human rights and
communication.
- OneWorld Online
Journal of OneWorld Online, a partnership of over 100 organisations working
for human rights and sustainable development. Provides news arranged by country
and theme.
- PeaceNet
PeaceNet serves peace and social justice advocates around the world in such
areas as human rights, disarmament, and international relations. A number
of alternative news services provide a range of information about these and
other topics from around the world.

This Council of Europe programme is aimed at raising awareness, developing
training tools and building networks for police and human rights in Europe.

Social Science Information Gateway: Set of links to selected, evaluated and

- Tolerance International
Network
The International Network for Education for Democracy, Human Rights and Tolerance
aims at identifying the best educational practice, programmes, concepts, and
models available. Their site includes a database of programmes, events (conferences,
workshops etc), organisations active in the field and materials for Education
for Tolerance, Human Rights and Democracy.

Contains news and links to UN documents and databases, as well as a special
section on human rights.
- Universal Declaration of Human Rights
The UDHR is the primary international statement of the fundamental rights
of all people on the planet. It was adopted by the United Nations General
Assembly in 1948 and represents the first comprehensive agreement among nations
as to the specific rights and freedoms of all human beings. These include
the right to equality before the law, to a fair trial, to freedom of movement,
freedom of thought, conscience, religion, opinion and expression.

Their aims are the following: to create and distribute human rights education
(HRE) resources via electronic and print media; train activists, professionals,
and students as human rights educators; and build advocacy networks to encourage
effective practices in human rights education.

- Women’s Human Rights
Sisterhood Is Global Institute is an international non-governmental, non-profit
organization dedicated to the support and promotion of women's rights at the
local, national, regional and global levels. With members in 70 countries,
SIGI works toward empowering women and developing leadership through human
rights education. This website features relevant resources, human rights education
programmes and a calendar of events.

Resources
Material providing information about the civil rights of women in today's
society in relation to employment, marriage and family life, nationality and
citizenship, politics, housing, prostitution, race and gender, immigration,
religion and culture, sexual orientation, slavery, and violence. Includes
articles and documents such as UN and NGO reports corresponding to each issue.
- World Democracy Audit
Draws together comparative data relating to the level of democracy in over
200 countries and dependencies, using criteria such as political rights, press
freedom, level of corruption, civil liberties, and human rights. Presents
democracy rankings for country groupings such as the OECD, the European Union,
G7, and the Arab League, and an overall ranking of nations with populations
over 1 million.
Human Rights education for young pople
- Say It Right
The unconventional Canadian youth edition of the United Nations Convention
on the Rights of the Child. Written in a child-friendly style it describes
all the rights and demonstrates some of them with real-life stories.
- HRI Online Youth
Centre
A site designed for Canadian young people. It includes a legal quiz, an online
library, and resources written by young people. It has direct links to other
sections of the Human Rights Internet website.
- People’s Decade of Human Rights Education
A site describing human rights with regard to 23 issues (the aged, children,
food, sexual orientation, etc). It also contains a summary of human rights
conventions.
- Oxfam Cool Planet
for Kids
Oxfam’s site teaching kids about children’s lives in various parts of the
world, explaining the activities of Oxfam, and presenting some funny stuff
online.
